AVI - Audio Video Interleave (AVI)
Audio Video Interleave (AVI), is a multimedia container format introduced in 1992. AVI files can contain both audio and video data in a standard container that allows synchronous audio-with-video playback. Like DVDs, AVI files support multiple streaming audio and video, although these features are seldom used.

DIVX
DivX is a brand name of products created by DivX, Inc. (formerly DivXNetworks, Inc.), including the DivX Codec which has become popular due to its ability to compress lengthy video segments into small sizes while maintaining relatively high visual quality. The DivX codec uses lossy MPEG-4 Part 2 compression, also known as MPEG-4 ASP, where quality is balanced against file size for utility.

Xvid - XviD
Xvid (formerly "XviD") is a video codec library following the MPEG-4 standard. Xvid is a primary competitor of the DivX Pro Codec (Xvid being DivX spelled backwards). In contrast with the DivX codec, which is proprietary software developed by DivX, Inc., Xvid is free software.

DVD - Digital Versatile Disc
DVD (also known as "Digital Versatile Disc" or "Digital Video Disc" - see Etymology) is a popular optical disc storage media format. Its main uses are video and data storage. Most DVDs are of the same dimensions as compact discs (CDs) but store more than 6 times as much data.

H.264
H.264 is a standard for video compression. It is also known as MPEG-4 Part 10, or MPEG-4 AVC (for Advanced Video Coding). The intent of the H.264/AVC project was to create a standard capable of providing good video quality at substantially lower bit rates than previous standards.

MPG - MPEG
MPG is the shortened version of MPEG. MPEG (MPEG-1, MPEG-2) is a standard for "the generic coding of moving pictures and associated audio information". It describes a combination of lossy video and audio compression. MPEG-2 is widely used as the format of digital television signals that are broadcast by terrestrial (over-the-air), cable, and direct broadcast satellite TV systems. It also specifies the format of movies and other programs that are distributed on DVD and similar disks.

MP4 - MPEG-4
MPEG-4 is a multimedia container format. It is most commonly used to store digital audio and digital video streams, but can also be used to store other data such as subtitles and still images. Like most modern container formats, MPEG-4 allows streaming over the Internet. The official filename extension for MPEG-4 is *.mp4, thus the container format is often referred to simply as MP4.

IFO
An IFO file is one of three types of files that are used on DVDs. It contains important navigational information, such as where a video chapter begins, and where audio and subtitle streams exist within the movie (VOB) file. IFO files are not encrypted. Other DVD files include VOB and BUP files.

Related Software & Guide: burn IFO to DVD, convert IFO to AVI

VOB
A VOB file (Video Object) is a container format contained in DVD-Video media. VOB is based on MPEG-2 program stream format, but with some additions. It contains the actual Video, Audio, Subtitle, and Menu contents in stream form. If the VOB file extension is changed from .vob to an MPEG-2 type file extension such as .mpg or .mpeg, the file is still readable and continues to hold all information, although most MPEG-2-capable players don't support subtitle tracks.

M2V - MPEG-2 Video Stream
M2V is an MPEG-2 Video Stream. It contains only video related data. MPEG-2 video stream files are normally destined to be multiplexed (muxed), which is the process of adding audio data and perhaps other streams such as subtitles, before use. MPEG-2 stream files are created by demultiplexing (demuxing) an existing MPEG-2, or by converting another video format to MPEG-2. The file extension M2V is used for files that contain both MPEG-2 video and audio streams, a use that may surprise those who expect only a video stream.

dvr-ms
dvr-ms (Microsoft Digital Video Recording) is a proprietary video and audio file format, developed by Microsoft. Video is encoded using the MPEG-2 standard and audio using MPEG-1 Layer II or Dolby Digital AC-3 (ATSC A/52). The format extends these standards by including metadata about the content and digital rights management.

VRO
A VRO file is a container format contained in DVD-VR media (usually used DVD recorders and cams). VR_MOVIE.VRO file contains the raw audio and video data for all video recordings on the disc. The recording metadata along with navigation data to represent playlist, programs and so on are also stored in the 'VR_MANGR.IFO' file in the same directory.

MOV
*.mov, file extension for the QuickTime multimedia file format developed by Apple. The QuickTime (.mov) file format functions as a multimedia container file that contains one or more tracks, each of which stores a particular type of data: audio, video, effects, or text (for subtitles, for example). Each track either contains a digitally-encoded media stream (using a specific codec).

ASF - Advanced Systems Format
*.asf - Advanced Systems Format (formerly "Advanced Streaming Format"), a Microsoft streaming format associated with Windows Media Player. The format does not specify how (i.e. with which codec) the video or audio should be encoded; it just specifies the structure of the video/audio stream. This is similar to the function performed by the QuickTime, AVI, or Ogg container formats. One of the objectives of ASF was to support playback from digital media servers, HTTP servers, and local storage devices such as hard disk drives.

3GP, 3GPP, 3G2, 3GP2
3GP is a multimedia container format defined by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) for use on 3G mobile phones. 3GP is a simplified version of the MPEG-4 container format, designed to decrease storage and bandwidth requirements in order to accommodate mobile phones. It stores video streams as MPEG-4 or H.263 or AVC/H.264, and audio streams as AMR or AAC.
